How to drive it

40 km/h neighbourhood street: parallel park at the right curb behind a parked car, then leave in one go.

  1. ① Reference point: the rear of the car ahead in the middle of your right rear window
Signal right, check your right mirror, do a right shoulder check, and slow down to pull up alongside the car ahead, about 1 m away; stop when its rear appears in the middle of your right rear window. Shift into R, do a 360° check before backing up, then turn the wheel all the way to the right.
  2. ② At 35°: straighten the wheels, adjust the right mirror down
Back up at walking pace; when the car is at 30°–45° to the curb, stop and straighten the wheels. Adjust the right mirror down to watch the right rear wheel, the front door handle and the curb.
  3. ③ Reference point: in the right mirror, the curb reaches the front door handle
Backing straight, look mostly out the rear window, with a glance at the right mirror now and then; when the curb line reaches the front door handle in the mirror, stop and turn the wheel all the way to the left.
  4. ④ Parallel to the curb: straighten, shift into P, park brake, mirror back
Stop when the car is parallel to the curb, the tires about 30 cm from it (Alberta requires within 50 cm); straighten the wheels, shift into P, set the park brake, and adjust the right mirror back right away. Forgetting to restore the mirror costs points.
  5. ⑤ Leaving: D, left signal, left mirror, wheel all the way left, left shoulder check, out in one go
Parked 3.2 m behind the car ahead, you have room to pull out in one left turn without backing up: shift into D, signal left, check your left mirror, release the park brake, turn the wheel all the way to the left, and do a left shoulder check last before moving off; pull smoothly into the lane, straighten the wheels, then turn off the signal.
