Right turn on red
Traffic lights · Right turn · Alberta Class 5 road test
Come to a complete stop; wait for traffic from the left and pedestrians
Watch the interactive demoHow to drive it
Right turn on red + traffic from the west approach + a pedestrian on the crosswalk
In the correct demo, you yield to:
- Pedestrian on the crosswalk ahead — Your path crosses a crosswalk: yield to anyone using it. Not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is a critical error, an automatic fail on the road test.
Common mistakes
No shoulder check before moving off
Road test: automatic fail — L2 Right of way violation - vehicle/pedestrian, D5 Fails to observe conditions/late
Your car hit a pedestrian. Before moving off into a turn, do a shoulder check toward the turn to cover the blind spot: pedestrians and cyclists coming up behind on that side can't be seen ahead or in the mirrors; skip that look and they may step onto the crosswalk just as you move off, and you hit them.
Watch this mistake →Didn't check left before moving off
Road test: automatic fail — L2 Right of way violation - vehicle/pedestrian, D5 Fails to observe conditions/late, L11 Hits vehicle/object
Your car hit another vehicle. After stopping, look left first: near-side traffic comes from the left (and when you turn right on red, the cross street has the green); without looking left you don't know whether a car is coming, and you move off right in front of it.
Watch this mistake →Didn't yield to an oncoming left turn on a green arrow
Road test: automatic fail — L2 Right of way violation - vehicle/pedestrian
Nothing was hit this time (just 1.4 m apart at closest approach), but it's still an automatic fail. An oncoming left-turner swings wide and can cut into your lane; turning ahead of it easily causes a crash, and you would be fully at fault.
Watch this mistake →Hesitating, obstructing traffic
Road test: automatic fail — L9 Obstructs traffic
Your hesitation forced the car behind to stop and honk, seriously obstructing traffic. With no one behind to hurry you, the examiner would tell you to go, and mark 5–10 points (usually 10).
Watch this mistake →Rolling stop before turning right
Road test: automatic fail — L3 Traffic light violation
Nothing was hit this time, but it's still an automatic fail. Turning right on a red light, you must first come to a complete stop before the stop line or crosswalk, and turn only once it's safe and you've yielded; turning without stopping completely is running a red light, even with no one around.
