Right turn at a stop sign
T-intersections · Alberta Class 5 road test
Stop before the crosswalk; yield to traffic from the left and pedestrians
Watch the interactive demoHow to drive it
T-intersection, right turn from the side road at a stop sign: come to a complete stop before the crosswalk + wait for traffic from the left and pedestrians + no need to yield to traffic from the right + turn into the parking lane first, then change lanes + the car behind stops again too
In the correct demo, you yield to:
- Pedestrian on the crosswalk you're turning into — Your path crosses a crosswalk: yield to anyone using it. Not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is a critical error, an automatic fail on the road test.
- Vehicle from the left going straight — Stop sign: yield to traffic on the approach with no sign. On the stop-sign side you must come to a complete stop, then yield to all traffic on the main road, whether it goes straight or turns; going ahead of it is a right-of-way violation, an automatic fail on the road test.
Common mistakes
Unnecessarily yielded to traffic from the right
Road test: 10 points — F2 Fails to assume own right of way
Nothing happened this time, but it still counts against you. That car's path doesn't cross yours, so the rules don't require you to yield to it; still standing there after yielding to everyone you had to is giving up your own right-of-way, and the cars behind you wait longer too.
