Left turn at a yield sign
T-intersections · Alberta Class 5 road test
Slow down ready to stop; the traffic has passed, so don't stop
Watch the interactive demoHow to drive it
T-intersection, left turn from the side road at a yield sign: slow to 15 km/h ready to brake + while rolling, look left, look right and do a left shoulder check + the car from the left has already passed, so turn left without stopping into the lane right of the yellow line
In the correct demo, you yield to:
- Vehicle from the left going straight — Yield sign: yield to traffic on the approach with no sign. On the yield-sign side, slow down ready to stop, and stop to yield if there's traffic on the main road.
Common mistakes
Stopped at the yield sign for no reason
Road test: 10 points — D3 Unnecessary stop
Nothing happened this time, but it still counts against you. A yield sign only requires you to slow down and look, stopping to yield only if there are cars or people; with the intersection clear, turn smoothly. Stopping for no reason is an unnecessary stop, and the cars behind have to stop too.
