Far enough back when it turns yellow: stop smoothly at the stop line
Watch the interactive demoHow to drive it
Going straight on green, the light turns yellow while you're still well back: enough room to stop safely + after reacting, slow down smoothly and stop at the stop line + wait at the red while cross traffic goes on its green + scan left and right before the next green, then go straight through
Common mistakes
Ran a yellow it could stop for
Road test: automatic fail — L3 Traffic light violation
The light had already turned red when you crossed the line. If the light turns yellow while you still have a safe braking distance to the stop line, ease off the gas and stop smoothly behind the stop line or crosswalk; go through when you could have stopped and the light has usually turned red by the time you enter the intersection, leaving you still across it when cross traffic gets its green.
