Uncontrolled T-intersection · side-road car from the right
Uncontrolled intersections · Alberta Class 5 road test
The through road isn't a main road: stop completely for the side-road car on the right
Watch the interactive demoHow to drive it
Residential T-intersection with no signs or lights; you're on the through road, the side road is on your right: slow to 15 km/h and look right only + a side-road car turns right into the road ahead of you + you reach the intersection about 1 second before it, and still stop completely before the crosswalk to let it go + after it passes, look right and move off straight
In the correct demo, you yield to:
- Vehicle from the right turning right — Uncontrolled intersection: yield to the vehicle on your right. At an uncontrolled intersection, a vehicle coming from your right has the right-of-way, whether it goes straight or turns; if there's one on your right, stop before the intersection and wait until it has passed. Going ahead of it is failing to yield, an automatic fail on the road test.
Common mistakes
Assumed the through road has priority, didn't yield to the side-road car
Road test: automatic fail — L2 Right of way violation - vehicle/pedestrian
Nothing was hit this time (just 1.8 m apart at closest approach), but it's still an automatic fail. At an uncontrolled intersection, a vehicle coming from your right has the right-of-way, whether it goes straight or turns; if there's one on your right, stop before the intersection and wait until it has passed. Going ahead of it is failing to yield, an automatic fail on the road test.

Road test: automatic fail — L8 Lacks caution at uncontrolled intersection
Nothing happened this time, but it's still an automatic fail. Approaching an uncontrolled intersection, clearly turn your head to scan each side that has a road (left and right at a four-way intersection, the side road at a T-intersection), checking for cars and people; look only ahead and you won't see a car coming from the right, or know to stop for it.

Road test: automatic fail — L8 Lacks caution at uncontrolled intersection
Nothing happened this time, but it's still an automatic fail. At an uncontrolled intersection, a vehicle from your right has the right-of-way; before you get there, ease off the gas and slow to about 15 km/h early, ready to stop for it at any moment. Too fast, and even if you see a car coming from the right you can't stop, the easiest way to get hit from the side.
